Traditional Carat house, Trinidad & Tobago

The Chulhans

Extended Family

Before concrete and corrugated iron, there were Carat houses. Homes roofed with leaves from the Carat Palm, walls of mud and daub, floors packed smooth with cow dung and red earth.

These houses kept families cool through the wet season and warm through the Christmas winds. They were built with hands that knew the land, by people who understood that shelter is more than shelter — it is memory made physical.

Our grandparents lived in a house like this. We are what grew from it.
